Successful sold-out seminar held in Winchester

We were delighted to welcome 400 delegates to our seminar. This was the only presentation Tony gave in England as part of his European tour in May 2023.

NAS South Hampshire Branch were delighted to welcome a third return visit to Winchester Guildhall by Professor Tony Attwood, a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism spectrum disorders since he qualified as a clinical psychologist in England in 1975. With a career spanning five decades, Tony is considered to be one of the world’s foremost experts on autism. He currently works in his own private practice, and is also adjunct professor at Griffith University, Queensland.


His book Asperger’s Syndrome – A Guide for Parents and Professionals has sold over 500,000 copies and has been translated into 27 languages. His subsequent book, The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome, published in October 2006 has sold over 300,000 copies and has been translated into 18 languages, and is one of the primary textbooks on Asperger’s syndrome, otherwise known as Autism Spectrum Disorder – Level 1. He has several subsequent books published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Future Horizons Inc. and Guilford Press on emotion management, relationships and sexuality, and general advice for autistic children and adults.


Tony has been invited to be a keynote speaker at many Australasian and International Conferences. He presents workshops and runs training courses for parents, professionals and individuals with Asperger's syndrome all over the world and is a prolific author of scientific papers and books on the subject. He has worked with many thousands of individuals of all ages with many expressions of autism.

Programme

  • Making Friends: Strategies to improve social understanding and friendship skills
    The presentation explains the four stages in the development of friendship and strategies to encourage the development of friendship skills and social integration from children as young as three years to adults.


  • Cognitive Abilities: A different way of thinking and learning profile
    The unusual profile of cognitive abilities associated with ASD-Level 1 (Asperger’s syndrome) is described with an emphasis on the distinct profile of intellectual abilities, problems with executive function, flexible thinking, coping with mistakes and weak central coherence. Strategies are described to improve motivation, organisational skills and academic achievement.


  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to treat depression in children, teenagers and adults
    A new CBT program for children, adolescents and adults who have ASD-Level 1 (Asperger’s syndrome) and are of concern for periods of intense sadness or a clinical depression. The signs of depression and reasons for feeling sad are explored, from being bullied and teased to perfectionism. Antidotes to depression are described that can be used by parents, psychologists and the autistic person.
